Max Umbs Returns to Compete in the 2026 Kia Skill National Cup

March 5th, 2026 by

Van Horn Automotive Group is proud to share some exciting news; Max Umbs has once again been selected to compete in the 2026 Kia Skill National Cup.

This is not just an honor. It’s a reflection of consistent excellence, dedication to craft, and the kind of professionalism that defines our team at Van Horn Kia of Sheboygan.

Recognized Among the Best in the Nation

Every two years since 2002, Kia University has recognized the top Kia dealership technicians in the United States through its National Cup competition. Unlike a standard qualifying test, Master Technicians are nominated by Kia Technical Training Instructors and evaluated by District Parts and Service Managers, Field Technical Specialists, and Tech line representatives.

Being selected means you are already considered one of the best.

Max will compete April 14–17, 2026, in Irvine, California, with the opportunity to advance to the World Cup in Seoul, South Korea, in May.

A Legacy of Excellence

For Max, the national stage is familiar territory.

He previously competed in the National Cup in 2012, 2018, and 2024. In 2024, he achieved a remarkable milestone by earning first place in the National competition, surpassing technicians from across the country to claim the title of the nation’s top Kia technician.

That victory earned him the opportunity to compete at the World Cup in Korea, where he faced off against the best technicians from around the globe and received the Excellence Award.

To be selected again in 2026 speaks to sustained excellence and dedication to the craft.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Max shared that being chosen again carries both excitement and humility. “With the selection process changing from a qualification exam to being hand-picked from a large pool of master-level Kia technicians, I’m both excited and extremely humbled for the opportunity to represent Van Horn Kia, Wisconsin, and the Central Region at the Kia Skill National Cup this year,” said Umbs. “My biggest motivation this year is not just proving that I’m one of the best Kia technicians in the country, but one of the best in the world. From the outside, Van Horn Automotive Group may look like just another large dealer group, but from the inside it still feels like family. Being able to represent that family of dealerships is something I’m truly proud of.”

What the Competition Involves

The Kia Skill National Cup tests technicians across five key areas:

  • Electrical Systems
  • Body Network
  • Drivability
  • Engine Mechanical
  • Transmission

These aren’t theoretical exercises. Competitors diagnose and repair complex, real-world issues under pressure. It’s a true measure of technical knowledge, problem-solving ability, and precision.

More Than a Personal Achievement

While competing at the national level is an incredible personal accomplishment, it is also a proud moment for the entire Van Horn team.

Van Horn Automotive Group believes in investing in people, supporting growth, and celebrating excellence. Max’s continued success reflects the strength of the service department and the culture of teamwork that surrounds him.

As he prepares to represent Van Horn and Kia on the national stage once again, the entire organization looks forward to cheering him on.

Congratulations, Max, we’re proud to have you on our team and can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.
